What it predicts

TRIX is the daily percent change of a 15-day average smoothed three times over, which filters out most day-to-day noise. Hold while it is above its 9-day signal line.

  • TRIX is the 1-day percent change of the close after it has been through a 15-day exponential average three times in a row. The signal line is a 9-day exponential average of TRIX.
  • In when TRIX crosses above its signal line.
  • Out when it crosses below.

How to use it

  • It trades often (about 12 switches a year per stock), so costs, spreads and taxes eat into it more than the backtest's 0.05% per switch suggests.
  • Expect to be wrong more often than right: only 38% of its calls worked. Its results come from the size of the winners, so following it means sitting through strings of small losses.
  • It worked best on Micro caps (50% beat holding on risk-adjusted return) and worst on Media & telecom (0%).
  • Use it as one input. Your signal combines the plays you count with the other factors you weight into one call.

When it worked

TRIX Signal Cross did best against holding in the COVID drop (+23% median gap) and worst in the 2020–21 rally (−29%). Median gap in return against holding the same stock (per year over stretches longer than 18 months; crypto excluded).
