Does DP Trend Model work?
Across 375 stocks, DP Trend Model cut the worst fall on 85%, beat buying and holding on risk-adjusted return on 23% and on raw return on 20%. Mainly a seatbelt: it softened the big falls on most stocks, but usually gave up return to do it.
What it predicts
DecisionPoint's intermediate-term trend signal is a BUY while the 20-day EMA is above the 50-day EMA. A cross back down is Neutral in a bull market and a Sell in a bear market; both mean cash here.
- In when the 20-day EMA is above the 50-day EMA (a DecisionPoint BUY).
- Out when the 20-day EMA is below the 50-day EMA, whether DecisionPoint calls it Neutral (50-day above the 200-day) or Sell (50-day below the 200-day).
Trend following plays bet that prices that have been rising tend to keep rising for a while, and falls tend to keep falling. The family guide
How to use it
- Expect to be wrong more often than right: only 29% of its calls worked. Its results come from the size of the winners, so following it means sitting through strings of small losses.
- It worked best on Indexes & ETFs (43% beat holding on risk-adjusted return) and worst on Media & telecom (10%).
- Use it as one input. Your signal combines the plays you count with the other factors you weight into one call.
