What it predicts

Swenlin's Price Momentum Oscillator smooths the daily percent change twice. Hold while it is above its 10-day signal line.

  • The PMO is a 20-day smoothing of 10 × a 35-day smoothing of the 1-day percent change. Each smoothing is an exponential average that weights the newest day by 2/n instead of the usual 2/(n+1).
  • In when the PMO crosses above its 10-day EMA signal line.
  • Out when it crosses below.

Momentum plays bet that what has risen most over the past months tends to keep outperforming for a while. The family guide

How to use it

  • It trades often (about 16 switches a year per stock), so costs, spreads and taxes eat into it more than the backtest's 0.05% per switch suggests.
  • Expect to be wrong more often than right: only 33% of its calls worked. Its results come from the size of the winners, so following it means sitting through strings of small losses.
  • It worked best on Micro caps (50% beat holding on risk-adjusted return) and worst on Sectors (0%).
  • Use it as one input. Your signal combines the plays you count with the other factors you weight into one call.

When it worked

PMO Signal Cross did best against holding in the COVID drop (+23% median gap) and worst in the 2020–21 rally (−30%). Median gap in return against holding the same stock (per year over stretches longer than 18 months; crypto excluded).
