What it predicts

Own stocks only in the strongest stretch of the 4-year presidential cycle: from the start of the fourth quarter of a midterm-election year to the end of June of the year after.

  • In at the close on the last trading day of September in a U.S. midterm-election year (2018, 2022, 2026 ...).
  • Out at the close on the last trading day of June in the pre-election year that follows.
  • Out for the other 13 quarters of every 4-year cycle.

How to use it

  • It trades rarely (about 0.5 switches a year), so it suits someone who checks in occasionally, and a single bad call can last months.
  • It sits in cash much of the time (holding on about 17% of days), so judge it on risk-adjusted return rather than on matching a rising market.
  • It worked best on Media & telecom (50% beat holding on risk-adjusted return) and worst on Big tech (0%).
  • Use it as one input. Your signal combines the plays you count with the other factors you weight into one call.

When it worked

Presidential Sweet Spot did best against holding in the 2008 crash (+46% median gap) and worst in the 2020–21 rally (−44%). Median gap in return against holding the same stock (per year over stretches longer than 18 months; crypto excluded).
