How the play works

  1. At each month-end, the score is 12 × the 1-month return + 4 × the 3-month return + 2 × the 6-month return + the 12-month return. Divided by 4, it is the average of the four returns, each scaled to a yearly pace.
  2. In when the score is above zero.
  3. Out when it is zero or below.

Keller and Keuning use the score inside their VAA and DAA strategies, which pick among asset-class ETFs and move to bonds or cash when too many look weak. On one stock, the stock is the only risky asset and cash is the safe one.

Signals are acted on the first trading day of the next month.

Where the rules come from

The case against

Valeriy Zakamulin tested moving-average timing on up to 155 years of U.S. stock data and found no statistically significant edge in the second half of that record. The rules earned their keep in a few severe bear markets and lagged buy and hold for long stretches in between.
